The hand-over ceremony of the second disaster prevention ship, which has been construction under Japanese ODA Loan through Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and is to contribute to the prevention of maritime disaster, is to be held at Ujung Surabaya, on July 22, 2005
On July 22 2005 at 8:30 am, the hand-over ceremony of the second marine disaster prevention ship, which JBIC supports through ODA Yen Loan, is to be held at Ujung with the attendance of ***** of Ministry of Communications. Mr. Minoru Shirota, Consulate General of Japan in Surabaya attends the ceremony and delivers a speech on behalf of Japanese delegation. As for the first marine disaster prevention ship, the ceremony was held in last January with the attendance of H.E. Hatta Rajasa, Minister of Communications.
Disaster Prevention Ships Procurement Project aims at preventing maritime accidents and at reducing the damages by maritime fires, oil spillage when they should occur. For this purpose, the Project financed the construction of two of 500 TEU maritime disaster prevention ships, and also provided trainings for crews for disaster prevention activities. The construction of the ship to be handed-over to the Minister of Communication on this occasion was commenced in October 2004.
The first ship was constructed in Niigata, Japan and the second ship to be hand-over was constructed in PT. PAL with technical advice from Niigata Zosen Company (a Japanese Company). In addition, trainings for crews were conducted on oil collection and protection in the case of oil spillage, and on extinguishing fire in the case of maritime fires in Japan. Through these activities, technical assistance and technical transfer from Japan has been done in the Project.

Apart from this Project, Japan has continuously assisted the development of maritime telecommunications system development since 1968, and ODA Yen Loan gMaritime Telecommunications Development Project IVh was provided in March 2004, which is to complete the maritime telecommunications network to cover all over Indonesia.@These ODA assisted projects aiming to contribute to the security and safety improvement, are also vital measures against pirates along Maraca Straits as well as marine terrorism.
