Inauguration of JBIC-Funded Sipansihaporas Hydroelectric Power Plant Project (Phases 1 and 2)

The Sipansihaporas Hydroelectric Power Plant Project (phases 1 and 2) that contributes to providing stable power supply in North Sumatera under ODA loan assistance of Japan Bank international Cooperation (JBIC) is scheduled to be inaugurated in December 1, 2005.

Today, December 1 at 10:00 am, President Yudoyono inaugurates the Sipansihaporas Hydroelectric Power Plant Project (1) and (2) in Sibolga of North Sumatera Province. The inauguration ceremony is also attended by Mr. Hiroharu Hashi, Japanese Consulate General in Medan, and Mr. Koki Hirota, Chief Representative of JBIC office in Jakarta.

The Project, which locates at Sipansihaporas river around 10 Km away to the east of Sibolga city in North Sumatera, aims at providing stable electricity supply in the North Sumatera area covering both North Sumatera Province and Aceh DI. Under the Project, a regulating dam, the first power plant (33MW generating capacity), the second power plant (17MW generating capacity), and the related transmission line have been constructed. After the completion of the project, around 204 GWh electricity per year (or equivalent to about 10% of annual power demand in North Sumatera province) can be generated to contribute to stable electric power supply in the North Sumatera area.

Sipansihaporas hydroelectric Power Plant Project (1) and (2), which completed after a 10-year period, was started in 1992 under JBIC ODA loan assistance to conduct engineering services such as detailed design, and conducted construction works with subsequent JBIC ODA loan assistances for phase 1 and phase 2--provided in 1995 and 1996 respectively.

Besides financing the project, JBIC ODA loan has supported for stable electric power supply in Indonesia with 133 power supply project amounting to 8,002 hundred JPY (equivalent to 20% of total ODA loan assistance amount in Indonesia). To North Sumatera where Sipansihaporas hydroelectric power plant project locates, Renun hydroelectric power plant project and Asahan hydroelectric power plant project has also been supported to date by JBIC ODA loan.
